Reflections in an Instant Eye: Celebrating Queer Family & Kinship with Photography

This photography workshop is an invitation to queer BIPOC families to come together and create images of empowerment and celebration. The workshop offers an affirming platform for queer of colour communities in Berlin to think about and share stories of their "families" and, through the creation of tangible memories via the instant camera, transform narratives around queer kinship as well.

The instant camera (the Polaroid or Instax) is a useful and accessible way to experiment and play with creating images, delivering immediate tangible documentation that encourages play and ease with image-making and photography. In this workshop, we hope to create a safe and supportive environment for self-expression and mutual support, moving towards an empowered and fun relationship with the camera.

We invite queer BIPOC people in Berlin to register along with their loved ones and bring along objects or mementoes that they would like to share with the group, as well as props to be used for the portrait sessions.

DeLovie Kwagala  is a trailblazing non-binary queer photographer and social activist from Kampala, Uganda. They are self taught and are currently based in Berlin, Germany. Their work explores narratives around identity, belonging, social injustices, and gender-sexuality with the intent to not sexualize, fetishize or stigmatize. They have worked with Facebook, UNICEF, TIME Magazine, The Guardian, The Washington Post, and many NGOs in Uganda and internationally.
