“For me as a craftsman, the act of creating art should complement the act of creating shelter for my family or liberating the country for my people. This is culture.” – Thami Mnyele

Pressing Against Apartheid is a study in printing and art as tools of political struggle inspired by the work of Medu Art Ensemble. Through a series of public screen printing workshops, participants are invited to produce and distribute prints on paper and textiles.

With Santiago Calderón García, we will focus on designing A3 posters together, combining the techniques of screen printing and photocopying. Together we will design and create posters based on images provided, which we can add text to using stencils and cut-outs. We will explore how these techniques can be used and combined for collective creation and cultural resistance, inspired by the ideas and work of the Medu Art Ensemble. At the end of the session, the posters will be folded into a leporello to create a collective publication.
