In the Shape of My Ghost

In this movement-based workshop, we explore gender fluidity and queerness through the lens of contemporary dance and ancient Chinese poetry. Who can participate? Open to all bodies and all levels of experience. Whether you are new to movement or a seasoned dancer, you are invited to explore with curiosity, presence, and openness.

We dance closely and respectfully. Consent is important. In this 2-hour session, Po-Nien invites participants on an introspective journey – from stillness to dynamic interaction – exploring virtuosity, flow, and connection. Blending contemporary dance with Chinese martial arts, the workshop weaves curiosity, availability, sensitivity, and playfulness into a cohesive physical state.

PO-NIEN WANG (he/him) is a Berlin-based freelance dancer, choreographer, and performing artist. He graduated from the Dance College at the Taipei National University of the Arts. A former dancer with Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, Po-Nien was a soloist in Lin Hwai-Min’s “White Water”, touring internationally.

In 2016, Po-Nien became a freelance artist and co-created the duet Distance for Dance Ensemble Singapore and the South Korean dancer Ji Eun Jin. In 2017, he was invited by then artistic director Marie Chouinard to perform at the Venice Biennale. He relocated to Berlin, Germany in 2018, and has since actively performed in festivals and theatres such as the Venice Biennale, Julidans, MilanOltre, and multiple seasons at Staats Oper Unter den Linden.

He is also a longtime guest dancer with Le Supplici, the company of Italian choreographer Fabrizio Favale. Po-Nien also worked as rehearsal director for Aakash Odedra Company’s “Samsara”, touring worldwide. "Prelude to Mountain Ghost" is Po-Nien’s first ever self-founded project. The piece is rooted in his personal exploration of belonging, queerness, fluidity, and identity. In 2024, he received grants from Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and the National Culture and Arts Foundation. The piece premiered at The Feuerle Collection in Berlin and was later selected at the WANT TO DANCE international festival for a residency at TROIS C-L – Maison pour la danse in Luxembourg.
